This year I was asked to speak at the Ontario Backcountry Canoe Symposium and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to say YES!
Hailey Sonntag: Testing the Waters – Canoe Tripping as a 19yr old
Hailey is a television broadcasting student, a lover of bacon, the blue waters of Killarney, and a seasoned year round camper. She has been canoeing and portaging since she was able to walk. Her first trip was when she was nine months old to the backcountry of Algonquin Park. Many of Hailey’s trips have been documented through various social media platforms. Now nineteen and more independent, the need to make her own food for dinner while backcountry camping has become a must. Hailey continues to trip alongside her family now packing her own gear and preparing her own meals which means the student budget comes into effect and KD becomes a specialty. Hailey will be sharing her experience tripping and planning with her younger sister for a 10 day canoe trip through Killarney Provincial Park.
So what exactly will my talk be about?
I will be sharing my experience tripping and planning with my younger sister Summer
for a 10 day canoe trip through Killarney Provincial Park. After tripping alongside my parents my entire life we decided the past few years that yes we would still trip with them but would do everything on our own gear and food wise.
I’ll be explaining our budgeting tactics and how we managed to pull off food for a 10 day canoe trip for under $70 each. As well as how I purchased my own gear and how we divide our gear load on portages between the both of us. For example, sometimes we would tandem carry the canoe with packs or sometimes I would solo carry the canoe. We made many alterations that fit our needs during the trip and we made note of things that worked and didn’t. I will be sharing our experience in doing this and how it works and how it completely changes the perspective of the same old “going on a canoe trip with my family”.
I am super excited to be apart of the symposium this year and cant wait to hear all of the other amazing speakers!
